Will You Be My Valentine?

Posted on: February 12th, 2022 | By Cliff Keith | Blog, Holidays | No Comments

Will You Be My Valentine?

Will You Be My Valentine?

Happy St. Valentine’s Day will you be my Valentine? Here’s a short history of Valentine’s Day. The story of a patron saint, St. Valentines, is shrouded in mystery for centuries. We know because February has long been celebrated as the month of romance. Americans found February as their St. Valentine’s Day. Containing vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman. Traditionally, St. Valentine meanings have changed over the ages. There is dogma associated with this famous holiday too.  But who was Saint Valentine? How did he become part of this ancient rite?

One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree. Valentine defied Claudius and continued to conduct marriages for young lovers in secret. Claudius hearing this, ordered Valentine to be put to death.

Other Stories

Other stories suggest that the killing  of Valentine was due to him attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons. Young Romans regularly faced beatings and torture whenever they questioned Claudius’s authority.

According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first valentine greeting to himself. He did so after he fell in love with a girl, possibly his jailor’s daughter, who visited him during his confinement. Being a priest we know that is a no-no.

Before he died, he wrote the girl a letter and signed it From your Valentine, an expression we still use today. Although the truth behind Valentine’s legends is murky at best, as a result the stories all emphasize his appeal for being sympathetic, heroic and most importantly romantic. Consequently, by the Middle Ages, perhaps thanks to this reputation, Valentine would become one of the most popular saints in England and France.

Origins of Valentine’s Day: A Pagan Festival in February

Will You Be My Valentine?

Some Romans believed celebrating Valentine’s Day in the middle of February seemed like a great idea. Because it mirrored the date commemorating the anniversary of Valentine’s death or burial. Valentine’s death occurred around A.D. 270. Others claimed the Christian church may have decided to place St. Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February to “Christianize” the pagan celebration of Lupercalia.

On the ides of February, (February 15) Romans celebrated Lupercalia, a fertility festival for the Roman god of agriculture Faunus. Most of all Roman founders Romulus and Remus were also honored as Romans. Believed when infants, Romulus and Remus were raised by a she wolf, Lupa. Finally, to begin the festival, Roman Priests of the Luperci, order, would gather at a sacred cave.  Read more…

Happy St Valentine’s Day to you all!

Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 17, 2022

Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 17, 2022

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 17, 2022

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Born Jan. 15, 1929, Atlanta, Ga

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Dr. King died April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tenn. Baptist minister and social activist who led the civil rights movement in the United States from the mid-1950’s until his death by assassination in 1968. His leadership was fundamental to that movement’s success in ending the legal segregation of African-Americans in the South and other parts of the United States. King rose to national prominence as head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

Famous Quote of Dr. King:

Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 17, 2022

“I’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land.”

– Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. King’s Life

Born Michael King, Jr., Martin Luther King, Jr. was the middle child of Michael King, Sr. and Alberta Williams King. The King and Williams families roots were in rural Georgia. Martin Jr.’s grandfather, A.D. Williams, was a rural minister for years and then moved to Atlanta in 1893. There he took over the small, struggling Ebenezer Baptist church with around 13 members and made it into a forceful congregation. He married Jennie Celeste Parks and they had one child that survived, Alberta.

Michael King Sr. came from a sharecropper family in a poor farming community. He married Alberta in 1926 after an eight-year courtship. The newlyweds moved to A.D. Williams home in Atlanta. Michael King, Sr. stepped in a pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church upon the death of his father-in-law in 1931. He too became a very successful minister and adopted the name Martin Luther King, Sr. in honor of the German Protestant religious leader Martin Luther.

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree

In due time, Michael, Jr. would follow his dad’s lead and adopt the name himself. Young Martin had an older sister, Willie Christine and a younger brother, Alfred Daniel Williams King. The King children grew up in a secure and loving environment. Martin Sr. was more the disciplinarian, while his wife’s gentleness easily balanced out the father’s more strict hand. Though they undoubtedly tried, Martin Jr.’s parents couldn’t shield him completely from racism. Martin Luther King, Sr. fought against racial prejudice, not just because his race suffered, but because he considered racism and segregation to be an affront to God’s will. He strongly discouraged any sense of class superiority in his children which left a lasting impression on Martin Jr.

Dr. King’s early years

Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 17, 2022

Growing up in Atlanta, Georgia, Martin Luther King, Jr. entered public school at age five. On May, 1936,  was the day of his baptism, but the event made little impression on him. In May, 1941, Martin was 12 years old when is grandmother, Jennie, died of a heart attack. The event was traumatic for Martin, more so because he was out watching a parade against his parents’ wishes when she died. Distraught at the news, young Martin attempted suicide by leaping from a second story window at the family home. This information copied from this source in part.

Christmas Celebrated the American Way

Christmas Celebrated the American Way

Christmas Celebrated the American Way

As the holidays approach, Christmas Celebrated the American Way is in full swing. The giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to offer Americans with monstrous piles of cheap goods — merchandise that are produced to a cost of the American labor force.

There’s a trend going around the internet now on how to Celebrate Christmas the American Way. This year why not make it different? This year Americans why not give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans?

No excuses

There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, there’s nothing produced with American hands. Oh…. Yes there is! It is time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper?

Everyone —   gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber? Gym membership? It’s right for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement.

Who wouldn’t appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates.

Buy Made in USA

Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plunking down the Benjamin’s on a Chinese-made flat-screen TV? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or someone to mow their lawn for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course.

There are a gazillion owner-run restaurants — all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn’t the fancy eatery sort, what about a half-dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint.

Remember, folks this isn’t about big National chains — this is about supporting your home town Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open. How many people couldn’t use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy?

What about MOM?

Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning woman for a day. My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running. OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes. How about them?

Christmas Celebrated the American Way

Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theater. Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands. Honestly, do we REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of light, about fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip.

Care about the American Way

You see, Christmas the American Way, is no longer about draining American pockets so that China or other countries around the world can build another glittering city.

Christmas is now about caring about US (We the People), encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams. And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we could never imagine.

Make THIS the new American Christmas tradition!! You can pass this post around to others and maybe you’ll start making a difference for the good of all.
