The 1st Thanksgiving Was Celebrated In 1621!

The 1st Thanksgiving Was Celebrated In 1621! The first Thanksgiving challenged early Americans and the American Indians. Because of its outcome of this important day it became an important part in our history. Thanksgiving from those early days in Plymouth is a day still enjoyed by all on this thankful Fall day.

What happened?

When early autumn of 1621  there was only around 53 of the surviving Pilgrims from over 200 who started the first colony. The Pilgrims celebrated their old English custom of acknowledging their successful harvest.

The Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Native Americans, work together forming a new bond as equals and friends.

Do remember William Bradford?

William Bradford was the Governor of Plymouth the first colony in the new frontier know as King George’s America. Everyone loved their new Country and the religious freedom it provided them. As the colony began to grow all its colonists went about their lives as they saw fit Some farmed, some continued skills they had learned in their early life. Unfortunately, there were some who believed doing nothing was productive enough. Come harvest time everyone started to realize there wasn’t enough food to survive the winter. The yield produced by those that farmed was low. There was not enough food for everyone.

American Indians to the rescue

Seeing the suffering of the Colonist, Indian Chief,  Massasoit brought 90 of his Braves to the Colonist’s Thanksgiving celebrate with food in hand.  Massasoit was a teacher who showed the Colonists how to grow their plants. He did this with an example of adding fish head under the seed.  Collaboration between the American Indians  and the Colonists provided the opportunity for the success of Plymouth and the establishment of the  beginning of the United States of America.

The Free Enterprise System

William Bradford realized the method of governance used in Plymouth did not work for the best of all.  He proclaimed that in the if the citizens of Plymouth did not produce something to barter or trade with others in the future would not be help by others.

What US President started the tradition?

In 1863, Abraham Lincoln was the President.  Lincoln began the now National tradition of  Thanksgiving. This was a time in history Lincoln was looking for a way to ease the tension between the North and South. A sad time in US history

Happy Thanksgiving

I would like to wish you and your family-loved ones the best Thanksgiving ever this year. Being thankful only one day out the year doesn’t seem to be enough. Enjoy!

Veterans Day A Brief History

Veterans Day A Brief History
9th Cav “We Can We Will”

Veterans Day; Americans know on November 11, 1918 was the day at the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, in the eleventh month, was the end of the “The Great War” WWI.  It was the date the fighting ceased between the Allied Forces and Germany. November 11, 1918 was the end of War I. Furthermore, it was the location of signing the Treaty of Versailles between the Allied Forces and Germany. The Treaty was signed June 28, 1919, almost 8 months later after the fighting stopped.

Who was the leading supporters?

In 1919, US President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th as the first Armistice Day.  “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride. For the heroism of those who died in the country’s service. And with gratitude for the victory” President Woodrow said this to his fellow Americans.

The Plan

Most noteworthy, the day was design to be one of celebrations. Originally there were parades and patriotic public meetings. Armistice Day surrounded itself with the feelings of thanks and good will towards others. Traditionally the United States outwardly displayed a spirit of peace and good relations with other nations. Americans  believed they had fought the last war they would ever have to fight.  No American wanted to experience the severe realities of war, which they had just gone through!

What did Congress do?

Veterans Day A Brief History
Medals Vietnam Era

Congress officially recognized the end of World War I on June 4, 1926. Congress at that time passed a resolution using these words:

“Whereas the 11th of November 1918, marked the cessation of the most destructive, sanguinary, and far-reaching war in human annals and the resumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed.”

“Whereas it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations.”

And, “Whereas the legislatures of twenty-seven of our States have already declared November 11 to be a legal holiday:

Therefore be it Resolved by the Senate (the House of Representatives concurring), that the President of the United States is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on November 11.”

Thus “inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other people.”

May 13, 1938,  Congress made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday.  After WWII in 1954 Congress Amended the Act, at the request of veterans service organization.  “Armistice” and replaced it with “Veterans”.  June 1, 1954. November 11th became the day to honor American veterans for all wars.

Do You Remember President Dwight D. Eisenhower?

October 8, 1954 President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first Veterans Day Proclamation.

Content of the Veterans Day Proclamation states: “In order to insure proper and widespread observance of this anniversary, all veterans, all veterans’ organizations, and the entire citizenry will wish to join hands in the common purpose.”

“Toward this end, I am designating the Administrator of Veterans’ Affairs as Chairman of a Veterans Day National Committee, which shall include such other persons as the Chairman may select, and which, will coordinate at the national level necessary planning for the observance.”

In conclusion, President Eisenhower went on to say because: “I am also requesting the heads of all departments and agencies of the Executive branch of the Government to assist the National Committee in every way possible.”  We have President Eisenhower to thank because he was the one who organized the modern-day legislation for Veterans. It stands to reason with President Eisenhower being a 5 Star General in the US Army during WWII. He was also the Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe.

Making it simple

Though simplifying National Holidays, by making them a standard 3 day weekends, was the accepted solution. Congress on June 28, 1968 standardized National Holidays.  Congress’s simple plan was to combine and celebrate 4 National Holidays. Mondays would be the day for these National Holidays. Here’s the designated holidays Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day.

In 1971 there was an outcry by Americans. Because they wanted Congress to fix the current abstract holiday schedule. They were worried about a standard 3-day holidays for all holiday suggested by Congress. President Gerald R. Ford, on September 20th, 1975, signed Public Law 94-97 (89 Stat. 479), which returned the annual observance of Veterans Day to its original date. As you may recall that was November 11th.

Preserving the historical significance of the original meaning of the Armistice Day.  Keeping the Veterans in the forefront of this legal federal holiday. Please don’t forget the American Veteran for all they have done for our great country. Because some served, and some gave the ultimate sacrifice, for their country.

Today, please help me by saying thank you to all the Veterans you may know or have known. They deserve your recognition and praise. Therefore, please do your part as an American and simply say thank you.

Are You Thinking of Firing Your Real Estate Agent?

Are You Thinking of Firing Your Real Estate Agent?

Are You Thinking of Firing Your Real Estate Agent?

Real Estate agents can be helpful but sometimes they can be useless. In this post you will discover reasons why you need a good agent. They will help you buy or sell your home. Sometimes you’ll find an agent who has commission breath. That agent will say or do anything to get you to sign a binding agreement. They are the most self-serving profession on the planet! If you meet one of these type of agent, RUN as fast as you can away from them.

By yourself you can find homes that are for sale. Find out what homes sold for in your neighborhood. And get the list for all the current open houses for the week-end. How hard could it be? Realtors have an easy job without any skill set.

Are the previous paragraphs true?  It depends on who you ask, but for the most part they are not true. Those paragraph describe the exception not the rule. And, there are 4 great reasons why you need a Realtor when buying or selling a home.

The 4 reasons

To start with, just because you have all the data about homes at your finger-tips doesn’t mean you understand it. For example, what does it mean if you see the months of inventory number going up? At what point do you need to heed to the trend or only keep an eye on it? Historically is last week’s figure worrisome while sitting at 4.2 for months of inventory?

This is only one example of data that needs interpretation you get from a seasoned and knowledgeable Realtor. Unless you have followed the month of inventory for at least the last six month. How would you know that mid-March the trend bottomed out? Likewise, how that trend has been on a steady upward movement? This trend was causing a good market for home buyers.

Points to consider

A home buyer knowing this would understand a full price offer might be too high of a bid to offer. A home buyer would be advised by a good agent to offer under full price. And will be the offer to be accept as the market is shifting. You may have the data, however, know how it relates to the current market is important in understand. And don’t forget about the lender and how they can stop the process immediately.

Secondly, homeowners who want to sell their homes by themselves are aware of the need for smart marketing to sell their home. They want to save the commission, which can be a lot of money. Craigslist Ads or a flyer is not the best way to sell a home in today real estate market.

Today’s home buyers want full disclosure about the home and see all the repairs completed and final permits by the local building department. Buyers want a move-in condition home. Their incomes are high and they don’t have time like the “Baby-Boomers”.

Boomers vs Today’s Home Buyers

Boomers wanted home where they could supply sweat-equity by making improvement themselves with their new home. This is another reason for the current rapid increase of home values, which is picture perfect today by including staging, updated kitchen and bathrooms, and customized amenities to meet the wants of today’s home buyer.

Unless you have the finger on the pulse of today’s home-buyer you will not bring a product (your home) to market that will sell for top dollar, in the shortest time, and with the least amount of issues and demands from buyers.

The sad part is, frustration sets in and then there is no one to act as the “go-between” between buyers and sellers and the deal dies a painful death without the meeting of the minds by all parties.

Don’t cry, be happy

Are You Thinking of Firing Your Real Estate Agent?

My third point to hire a Realtor for your real estate transaction is the inside track most Realtors have with each other. Realtor will talk directly to a fellow agent because there isn’t any emotions on the table. It’s more a matter-of-fact conversation about what their clients want and need. It doesn’t mean they will have a meeting of the minds but they will communicate what each sides want in the transaction. If they decide, with the advice and help of their clients, that the price and terms are unacceptable to either party they can move on to another home. It’s the most efficient way to transfer ownership of real property for all the parties involved.

What do most people do?

Finally, believe it or not most real estate transactions happen because of a Realtor. The terms are far better for all parties and the legal mistakes happen less often. In today’s market we are seeing homes being sold for over $10M by Realtors. There is a reason for this. Even smart people understand the usefulness of a Realtor’s expertise.

Realtors know where the nooks and crannies are hidden. They know the customs and traditions of their respective markets, which vastly vary from one community to another. For example, a percolation test in Redwood City is usually not needed but if you are in Woodside, more times than not you better order one for a new buyer.

What is a FISBO?

FISBO (For Sale By Owner) is a term for those who are thinking of not using a Realtor during your buying or selling a home. The learning curve may surprise you and the amount of “stuff” you will need to do and pay for up front may even shock you. Realtors, like any profession have good ones and there are bad ones. Selecting a Realtor also takes time and effort. One simple hint is if you want to use a Realtor be sure to write all questions you may have and ask each agent you interview the same questions so you can compare apples to apples.

If you would like a list of questions to ask a Realtor you want to interview send me email to cliff@sfbayhomes.com and ask my report, “The 12 Most Important Questions to Ask a Realtor” I will send it right out to you. Best of all it’s FREE and without obligation.

Conclusion

In conclusion, a Realtor is worth their weight in gold provided you hire the right one. Asking the right questions in the beginning is the best way I know to insure you have a successful and profitable real estate transaction.

Home Security Checklist Everyone Needs To Read

Posted on: September 27th, 2023 | By Cliff Keith | Blog, Featured Posts, Wednesday Seller Tips - Real Estate Know-How For Home Sellers |

Home Security Checklist Everyone

Needs To Read

Here's The Fall Home Security Checklist...

Here’s The Spring Home Security Checklist… as your guide to protect your family from possible home break-ins with these simple safety measures. If you don’t have your home secured this post is for the average home owner to show areas where they could take action to improve their home’s security.

These are just a few of the steps you may take to decrease the likelihood that you or your home become victims.

Home Security Checklist Exterior Doors:

Lock all doors at night and every time we leave the house—even if it’s just for a few minutes.

Doors are solid hardwood or metal-clad.

Doors feature wide-angle peepholes at heights everyone can use.

If there are glass panels in or near your doors, they will shattered if the are not re-enforced.

All entryways have a working, keyed entry lock and sturdy deadbolt lock installed into the frame of the door.

Spare keys are kept with a trusted neighbor, not under a doormat or planter, on a ledge, or in the mailbox.

Garage and Sliding Door Security:

The door leading from the attached garage to the house is solid wood or metal-clad and protected with a quality keyed door lock and deadbolt. A good locksmith I have had good luck with for many years is Lockworks Unlimited in Redwood City

The overhead garage door has a lock so that we do not rely solely on the automatic door opener to give security.

Garage doors are all locked when leaving the house.

The sliding glass door has strong, working key locks.

A dowel or pin installed will secure a glass door to prevent the door from being shoved aside or lifted off the track.

Lock your sliding door every night and each time we leave the house.

 Protecting Windows:

Every window in the house has a working key lock or is securely pinned.

Make sure windows are always locked, especially when opened a few inches for ventilation.

Home Security Checklist Everyone Needs To Read
Lighting

Outdoor Security:

Trim shrubs and bushes so there is no space for someone to hide.

There are no dark areas around out house, garage, or yard at night that would hide prowlers.

Every outside door has a bright, working light to illuminate visitors.

Floodlights helps to make sure effective illumination.

Outdoor lights are on in the evening—whether someone is at home or not. One way is to install a photo cell or motion-sensitive lighting system.

Our house number is clearly displayed so police and other emergency vehicles can find the house quickly.

Adding security cameras are now an inexpensive and efficient way to see who comes on your property.

Security When Away From Home:

Arrange at least two light timers to turn the lights on and off in a logical sequence When you are away from home for an extended time Home Security Checklist Everyone Needs To Readperiod. Homeland Security has a PDF on  proper lightening, which you can read by going to their site.

Turn on the motion detector or other alarm system (if you have one) when we leave home.

Stop your mail and newspaper deliveries or arrangements for a neighbor/friend to pick them up when we go away from home for a your vacation or business trip.

Ask a neighbor to tend the yard and watch your home when you are away. The Neighborhood Watch Institute has a good website to help Redwood City homeowners.

Outdoor Valuables and Personal Property:

The most forgotten security measure  is to check gate latches, garage doors, and shed doors to make sure they are all locked with high-security, laminated padlocks.

Some items we use regularly like grills, lawn mowers, and other valuables are best out of sight in a locked garage or shed.  If that is not practical and they need to be left out in the open, make sure they are hidden from view with a tarp. To add a help touch securely locked to a stationary point.

Lock every bicycle with a U-bar lock or quality padlock and chain.

Make sure you always lock your bikes, even if we leave them for just a minute.

Store firearms unloaded and locked in storage safes and secured with trigger guard locks.

Inscribe your valuable items, such as television, stereos, and computers with identifying number approved by local police.

Our home inventory is up-to-date and includes pictures. Keep your inventory work sheet in a location outside of the house. There are various ways to mark your possession. The one I like best is forensic marking.

Home Security Checklist – Redwood City – San Carlos Real Estate,  is only a guide to help you. Thieves are difficult to stop 100%.  Be careful out there. Please use caution and think it through to protect yourself and your family.
