The Seasons of Life

Cliff's Notes on real estate... May 2019
Tree

There once was a woman who had four sons. Above all else, the woman wanted to teach her sons tolerance; she wanted them to learn not to judge things too quickly. So, she sent them each on a quest, one by one, to go and look at a pear tree that was a great distance away.

The first son went in the winter, the second in the spring, the third in summer, and the youngest son in the fall. When they had all gone on their individual journeys and returned, she called them together to describe what they had seen.

The first son said that the tree was ugly, bent, and twisted. The second son disagreed and said that it was covered with green buds and full of promise. The third son described it differently and insisted that it was laden with blossoms that smelled so sweet and looked so beautiful, it was the most graceful thing he had ever seen. The last son disagreed with all of them; he said it was ripe and that the fruit was practically falling off the branches.

The mother then explained to her sons that they were all correct, because they had each seen but one season in the tree’s life.

She told them that you cannot judge a tree, or a person, by only one season; she explained that the essence of who they are – the pleasure, joy, and love that come from a full life – can only be measured at the end of all the seasons.

If you give up when it’s winter, you will miss the promise of your spring, the beauty of your summer, and the fulfillment of your fall. ~Cliff

Beauty in Nature

Flower Vase

So many beautiful May blooms pop up in gardens! Creating a classic mixed-flower arrangement doesn’t have to be difficult. Use your intuition (and incorporate a few basic guidelines) to arrange gorgeous bouquets.

  • Start by arranging the flowers in your hand and placing the larger flowers near the base of the group. Incorporate dark blooms for drama or use flowers in lighter tones for a softer effect.Begin with the flowers:
  • Consider the size.

Pay attention to the height and shape of the flowers that you’re using and arrange taller stems near the top and back.

  • Work with the stems.

Strip stems of any leaves that would otherwise be standing in water. Choose a vase or container that is appropriate for the height and proportion of your flowers.

  • Give it shape.

Lightly bind the stems with twine or floral wire and place in a vase or use moist floral foam in shallow containers to give short stems more stability.

  • Add some depth and interest.

Fill in the gaps with smaller blooms. Blue or violet flowers often act as a neutral and can fill out an arrangement without overwhelming your colors scheme.

  • Add greenery.

Insert a few leaves of greenery near the bottom to form a casual “rim” for the arrangement.

Once you have your arrangement looking pretty, be sure to put it in a location where you can change the water every day and stop and smell the roses (or peonies or lilacs) along the way.

ee them — which reminds you to eat them — but you’ll also keep moisture out.

Remove rotting produce immediately, as that will cause the other produce to spoil faster.

Hack It!

One of your favorite friends has the flu, and you’ve agreed to watch their 10-month-old and 2-year-old for the next week to let them recover. Then it dawns on you: your house is not baby compatible. Don’t panic. You’ve got this! Here’s what you can do with everyday items:

  • An inflatable kiddie pool can double as an impromptu
  • Use a laundry basket in the tub when it’s time to bathe toddlers.
  • Cover outlets with Band-Aids or masking tape.
  • Twist a rubber band around the knobs of cabinets to prevent little hands from accessing them.
  • Put a little bit of water on a piece of bread to pick up broken glass; the little shards will embed in the bread without the danger of cutting little fingers or feet in the process.

Be Switzerland

On the first day of school, 5-year old Bobby stood by the front door with butterflies in his stomach. He shared his biggest concern with his mother: “How will I make friends?” Crouching in front of him, she handed him advice he would carry with him for many years: “Be Switzerland.” In other words, be friends with everyone; treat everyone equally and fairly.

For the next 18 years, he lived by these words. He ended first grade with a classroom full of friends and made it through middle school by making friends across different groups of kids. In high school, he met kids who had come from different middle schools and they became some of his best friends.

When it came time for his college graduation, Bobby was looking to become part of the real world and he knew he would have to make a whole new set of friends at work. He revisited what he learned as a young child and reassured himself that on that first day of work he would whisper two words to himself, thanks to his mom: “Be Switzerland.”

Mom Was Right

Fruits and Veggies

Researchers at the University of Leeds and the University of York in the U.K. have uncovered a positive association between the quantity of fruit and vegetables consumed and people’s self-reported feelings of well-being.

Specifically, the findings indicate that eating just one extra portion of fruits and vegetables a day could have the same effect on mental well-being as roughly 8 extra days of walking, for at least 10 minutes at a time, for an entire month.

This particular study was designed to follow the same individuals over time, and also accounted for other factors that might affect the outcome of the study, such as age, education, income, marital status, employment status, lifestyle and health, as well as consumption of other foods such as bread or dairy products.

The bottom line? Mom was right: eating your fruits and veggies may make you happier as well as healthier.

Clean Sweep

Having a morning and evening routine can make a big difference in how your day comes together. Sure, you might get away with rinsing your cup on the way out the door and leaving it out to dry every now and again, but those little shortcuts all add up. Follow this basic guide to keep things running smoothly:

  • Morning: Make your bed, throw the dirty laundry in the washing machine, empty the dishwasher, and put away any slippers, socks, or robes that are left out after getting dressed for the day.
  • Afternoon: When you walk in the door from your day out at work or running errands, take ten minutes to go through each room and gather loose items, return things to their proper place and restore each room to basic functionality. This is as simple as making sure that towels are straightened out in the bathroom, your keys are in the correct place, pets have fresh water, and the mail is all opened and dealt with for the day.
  • Evening: Don’t go to bed with dishes in the sink! Take a couple of minutes to start the dishwasher, including any containers that came home in lunchboxes or have been in the refrigerator for more than a few days, wipe the counters clean, and make sure that the trash cans are all emptied. Before you head off to bed, turn off any extra lights and plug in electronics that need to be charged for the next day

Even Queen Elizabeth II sometimes goes unrecognized. A story from the Hello magazine website tells of a time when the queen’s car drove up to the Royal Windsor Horse Show in 1991. A guard walked up and told her, “Sorry, love, you can’t come in without a sticker.”

Unfazed, her majesty answered, “I think if you check, I will be allowed to come in.”

He did, and she was.

University of Maryland scientists YuHuang Wang and Ouyang Min have engineered the first fabric to automatically react to outside temperatures and automatically trap or release heat.

Although the concept of thermal fabrics is not new, this is the first time that scientists have created a fabric that responds to the environment itself.

The base yarn for this new textile is created with fibers made of two different synthetic materials: a base yarn that absorbs water and a coating of conductive, carbon nanotubes that repels it. The two materials work together, releasing heat in warm humid conditions and trapping heat when conditions are cool and dry.

When conditions are warm and moist, such as those near a sweating body, the fabric allows infrared rays to pass through in the form of heat. When conditions

become cooler and drier, the fabric reduces the amount of heat that can escape. The development was reported in the February 8, 2019 issue of the journal Science.

More work is needed before the fabric can be used in clothing and sold on the market but according to the researchers, the two components are not that hard to obtain. The materials used for the base fiber are readily available and the carbon coating can be easily added during standard dyeing process.

The 10 Do’s and Don’ts on Credit…

___________________________________________________________________________________________

The Link Between Stress And Stroke

Stroke is a devastating experience in which blood is cut off from a part of the brain. It can have many contributing factors. One of them, physicians now say, is stress.

According to the journal Stroke, researchers looked at medical records of more than 6,000 men and women who participated in a 16-year study. As part of the study, participants’ anxiety levels were measured. Over the course of time, 416 people suffered at least one stroke. The researchers determined that the risk of stroke rose 14% among individuals with higher anxiety levels, as measured in terms of such symptoms as extreme nervousness, tension, and general stress. Participants with especially high rates of these symptoms were identified as having an increased risk of 33%.

One possible connection: Stress often leads to unhealthy habits like poor nutrition, smoking and drinking, and lack of exercise. Stress also contributes to higher blood pressure, one of the main culprits behind stroke.

Old Age Is Great For Creativity

We sometimes think creativity is for young people. Children are endlessly imaginative, but the elderly are set in their ways. After all, we think, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks,” right? Consider this list of creative accomplishments by people who may have seemed to be past their prime:

  • The famous German poet finished part two of his masterpiece Faust shortly before his death in 1832, when he was 83.
  • Arthur Rubenstein. This concert pianist performed at Carnegie Hall at age 90.
  • Grandma Moses. Artist Anna Mary Robertson, better known as “Grandma Moses,” had her first solo exhibition of paintings in 1940, when she was 80 years old.
  • George Bernard Shaw. The Irish-born playwright remained active until his death in 1950 at age 94, when he published his final play. He was working on another unfinished play when he died.
  • Pablo Casals. The cellist and conductor, born in 1876, continued to perform on concert tours into his eighties.

Why Do Rabbits Bring Easter Eggs?

Posted on: April 18th, 2019 | By Cliff Keith | Blog, Holidays | No Comments

What is Easter?

Easter is close at hand and the celebration start today on Good Friday.  On Sunday Christians will be celebrating Easter. It’s the day Christians believe their Lord and Savor, Jesus Christ rose from the dead into heaven.

Christians will celebrate the day by going to church/mass dressed up in their Sunday finest. It spring time and the time for renewal of nature. With Easter here I have often wondered why in the world does a rabbit bring Easter eggs?  A rabbit doesn’t produce eggs, nor do they eat eggs so what’s the deal with the bunny rabbit delivering eggs for all the children? Don’t you agree?

Why Do Rabbits Bring Easter Eggs?
Pagan Goddess Eostre

Research on Rabbits

When I started to do my research on the subject I thought a simple Google search would show me the solution.  I didn’t realize I was opening a can of worms!  This is pretty serious stuff the rabbit and these Easter eggs. What I found out it is strictly a religious matter. Because of differences fought between Pagans and Christians.  The Pagans believe in the Anglo-Saxon goddess, Eostre, and of course the Christian didn’t. The Christians believed in Jesus Christ. Therefore, there is no answer except for it depending on your own personal beliefs.

Who was Eostre?

Eostre was a Pagan Goddess whose symbols were the rabbit and the egg.  First of all in pagan religion, both the egg and the bunny are symbols of fertility. In the pagan religion, Easter was the “spring festival”. It was time for celebrating fertility and requesting of the Gods that they would give good crops. On the other hand some believe that the only connection to Eostre and Easter is that they are both issues spoken in English.

For example

As a result, people like Catherine Beyer, believe in that the Romantic languages, the word for Easter is based on Pesach, the Hebrew word for Passover, which Jesus was celebrating at the time of his execution. And that is all Easter is about according to Catherine Beyer.  They say, to bring anything else into the picture referring to something like eggs and rabbits is just not worthy of discussion.

In conclusion:

Why Do Rabbits Bring Easter Eggs?
Easter Rabbit Stonehedge

From a historical standpoint all I can say is that the answer to the age-old question about why we have Easter egg hunts. Furthermore, we see little bunnies everywhere hence it is for you to decide for yourself.  I know what is in my heart.

Do, you know now Why Do Rabbits Bring Easter Eggs? I am going to go look for some See’s Candies chocolate eggs. Those are the eggs I enjoy most

 Happy Easter.

The View from the Back of the Room

A world-famous scientist was being driven to a university where he was scheduled to give a lecture. During the drive he confided to his chauffer: “I’m not sure how interesting I can make this talk. I’m getting a little bored with giving the same lecture at every campus we visit.”

“I have an idea,” said the driver. “I’ve been listening from the back of the room each time you’ve given this lecture and I know the material pretty well by now. Why don’t we trade places? I’ll take your notes and give your speech, and you can sit in the back of the room and relax— besides, it might be fun for you to watch everyone.”

“I’ll take you up on that offer,” replied the scientist. Before they arrived at their destination, the pair stopped at a coffee shop and traded clothes. The scientist then drove while the chauffer reviewed the lecture notes from the backseat.

The driver was able to pull off the lecture with no problem, but several minutes into the Q&A portion of the presentation, a student asked a rather complicated question.

The driver, standing confidently at the podium, maintained his composure as he said, “The answer to that question is so simple that I’m going to let my driver, seated in the back of the room, answer that for you.”

Upon having the students all turn to him for the correct answer, the scientist realized how grateful he was for his position. Sometimes a change of perspective is all we need to see our life through others’ eyes.

Climate Change

We’ve all sat in meetings which could have been a tad bit more productive. Possibly, the person conducting the meeting failed to create the best environment for a productive discussion. For the next meeting you lead, follow this advice.

• Insist on an atmosphere of confidentiality.

You’re probably not discussing national security or high-level business information, but the principle should remain the same: whatever people say in the room should remain in the room. People can speak openly when they don’t have to worry about their words coming back to haunt them later. Share results, not talk.

  • Agree on a united front.

Whatever disagreements arise during the meeting, make sure everyone is committed to standing together once the meeting is over. You should encourage people with different points of view to express their opinions, but impress on everyone the need to support your final decision and not undercut it later.

  • Don’t let silence reign.

Too often meetings end in apparent agreement because no one spoke up to ask a question or offer a different idea. As a leader, make a point of asking the quiet people what they think— and remind folks that voicing their thoughts is a fundamental responsibility.

  • Discourage interruptions.

When discussion grows animated, aggressive speakers can easily drown out others in the room. You should play referee when this happens— make certain that everyone gets a chance to speak. Employees who get shortchanged in one meeting may contribute little to the next meeting.

Please don’t keep me a secret The next time you’re in a conversation with a friend from work, your neighborhood, church, your gym or country club and they mention that they are interested in selling their house or rental property please, don’t keep me a secret. Pick up your cell phone, look up my number, (hint: 650-346-7366) and call me immediately. When you call we can talk about what would be the best way for you to introduce them to me.

April Fish!

Across the world, there are several variations of playing an April Fool’s joke on a good-natured friend, co-worker, or family member.

Although the exact history of where the tradition originated is unknown, the most likely answer appears to date back to when the Julian Calendar was updated to the Gregorian Calendar. When the start of the New Year switched from March to January, April “fools” could be tricked into believing it was a new year.

Whether or not that story is true, the fun of playing a practical joke is enjoyed in countries all over the world on April 1. Here are just a few variances on the tradition:

  • In France, you are an “April Fish” if you are young enough to fall for a trick.
  • Similarly, sticking a paper fish to someone isn’t uncommon in Italy.
  • In England and Ireland, tricks are only played in the morning; to play a trick on someone after noon is considered bad form.
  • Newspapers in Norway and Sweden often publish a hoax story among the rea l news to have fun by fooling the general public.
  • The Portuguese sprinkle a little flour on each other’s backs so foolish tricks wont “stick” to anyone as they go about their day on April 1.
  • In Scotland, April is begun with a “Gowk” being given a letter or note to drop off with a friend. The contents of the letter instruct the recipient to deliver it to someone else, and so on, throughout the day, rather like a human chain letter.

Eat Your Veggies

Even the ripest apple or the leafiest lettuce can carry dirt and unsafe bacteria that needs to be thoroughly washed off before it’s safe to eat. Follow these tips for making sure your produce is safe to eat:

• Start with a clean slate. Wipe down your kitchen counter, scrub your knives and cutting boards, and wash your hands before cleaning your food.

• Water is best. Use cool water (no soap!) and wash for 30 to 60 seconds in most cases.

• Wash peeled food, too. Dirt and microbes can hide in the outer crevices of such fruits like oranges and bananas. Even though you don’t eat the skin, washing it prevents the spread of harmful bacteria through con- tact with your fingers.

• Don’t wash and store. Wait until you’re ready to eat the item in question. If you wash it and then stick it in the refrigerator, it will retain moisture and spoil faster.

• Use a brush. For firmer fruits and vegetables such as apples and potatoes, a stiff vegetable brush can do a good job of removing dirt and particles you don’t want to eat.

Big Eggs

How long did dinosaur eggs take to hatch? Paleontologists know very little about dinosaur embryology, so it isn’t easy to tell, but with CT scanners and high-resolution microscopy, they’re finding out more.

Recent findings show that non-avian dinosaurs likely took longer to hatch than their feathered counterparts, not unlike how modern reptiles hatch at a later age than today’s birds. Scientists looked at the fossilized remains of two dinosaur embryos, focusing on the formation of their teeth. Analyzing growth lines, they were able to determine that one dinosaur had died at three months and the other at six months.

The difference in hatching times may have had an impact on the large dinosaurs’ eventual demise. Because they require more food and other resources to live to adult size, larger reptiles were likely more vulnerable than smaller animals (amphibians, birds, and other mammals) to an extinction event.

The Truth Really Was Out There

A series of UFO sightings in the 1950s that sparked interest in flying saucers may have an explanation: the CIA. The agency released a document describing top-secret tests of the high-flying U2 spy plane during that time, and in this case, fact is more normal than fiction.

Because the U2 flew at higher altitudes than any other known airplanes, pilots and others who spotted the test flights may have believed that they were seeing machines from another world. The CIA estimates that half of all UFO reports during the 1950s and 1960s were actually sightings of the U2 in flight.

Once In a Pink Moon

Long ago, ancient cultures referred to the months of the year by their moon. Each of the moons had unique characteristics related to the seasons. A few of those sensible names are still heard today. For example, many people refer to the full moon in October as a Harvest moon.

April was beautifully named the Pink Moon by Native Americans, in reference to the wild Phlox flowers that bloomed across the ground in waves of bright pink.

However, April also had other names that indicate the return of spring, including Sprouting Grass moon and Egg moon.

Basic Math

“If I give you two cats, then two more, then another two, how many cats would you have?” the tutor asked.

“Seven,” Tyler replied.

“Hmm,” the tutor sighed. “If I give you two apples, then two more, then two more, how many apples do you have?”

“Six,” Tyler replied.

“Very good,” said the tutor. “So, if I give you two cats, then two more, then two more.

How many cats do you have?” “Seven,” Tyler replied.

“What?! How are you coming up with a different answer for cats than apples?!” the confused tutor asked.

“Because I already have a cat,” Tyler replied.

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day. Today is celebrated by many people throughout the United States.  Though not a Federal legal holiday, March 17th is still celebrated for many reasons. The pseudo Irish, those without Irish heritage love to join in. A normal group dynamics of honoring Saint Patrick with everyone else is the call of the day. Primarily a celebration by the Irish and Irish American culture everyone else want to be included on this special day. On Saint Patrick’s Day you will see everyone celebrations by wearing anything green, eating corn-beef and cabbage along with drinking copious amounts of alcohol. (Preferably Irish whiskey.) There is also an underlining celebration of a religious observances with a number of parades.

Celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day on the North American continent began in the late eighteenth century. It was so deep rooted as a holiday that it continues to this day.

On this date in history:

1776 – American Revolutionary War: The British Army in Boston, Massachusetts withdrew from Boston, which ended the 11 months fight between them and the American patriots known as the Siege of Boston.

1950 – The synthesis of californium, a radioactive trans-uranium element, became known to the public.

1963 – The most recent eruption of Mount Agung on Bali, Indonesia killed some 1,500 people.

2000 – Over 700 followers of the Ugandan sect Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God perished in a fire and a series of poisonings and killings, considered either a cult suicide or an orchestrated mass murder by it leaders.

It’s good to be Irish

Limited details of Saint Patrick is recorded in history. Born into a wealthy Romano-British family in the 4th century in Roman Britain.  Saint Patrick’s grandfather and father were deacons in the Christian Church.

At 16 Patrick was captured and made a slave. His captors, Irish raiders believed to have taken Saint Patrick to the west coast of Ireland.  It was believed Saint Patrick was enslaved in Mayo.

As the story goes…

As the story goes in Patrick’s Confession he had a dream one night and in that dream he escaped from his captors because of the words he heard from God. He boarded shortly there after a ship heading to Britain.  Once back in Britain he immediately joined the Church in Auxerre in Gaul and begun his studies as a priest.

In 432 A.D. he again claimed God had spoken to him and told him to return to Ireland. (This time he went back as a bishop not a slave.)

His duty to God was to Christianize the Irish from their native polytheism.  Bishop Patrick as a teaching method to explain the Christian doctrine of the Trinity according to Irish folklore used the shamrock.

After almost 30 years of practicing his evangelism bishop Patrick died on March 17. 461 A.D.. As tradition went, Bishop Patrick’s body got buried at Downpatrick. Bishop Patrick was highly regarded as the principal champion of Irish Christianity. Held in high esteem, Saint Patrick’s standards caused the Irish Church to honored him in all their celebrations.

Being part Irish I want to wish everyone a very Happy St. Patrick’s Day.  Eat, Drink, and be Merry!
