8 Bum Steers You Know About Gardening. Part 6

This is an 8 part series on gardening tips you thought were correct that science has now proven false.  The good aspect about this information is if you don’t want to believe it than you don’t have to and it probably won’t make your garden completely fail and not produce.  Enjoy and dig it!

Bum Steer: Add nitrogen to soil mulched with wood chips.

Scientists have proven that wood chip will NOT deplete nitrogen in the soil.  It is true if you add wood chips or other organic material like leaves or manure, which has not been composted and has not decomposed yet.  When adding decomposed material to the soil the surrounding area suffers from depletion of nitrogen initially but once it breaks down or composts it will offer nitrogen for the soil.

If you add wood chip as a top layer for mulch and it’s not mixed into the soil the wood chips will not deplete your soil of nitrogen.  Studies have shown over time the mulch of wood chips is actually great for your garden’s soil.  The break down of the mulch enriches the soil with nutrients, including nitrogen over time.
