8 Bum Steers You Know About Gardening Part-2 Not what you learn about gardening may be true anymore

From time to time in our lives we are told what to do and not do in the garden. I have found 8 truths I thought I could count on, which were not true. I hope you enjoy my discovery over the these 8 posts

This is an 8 part series on gardening tips you thought were correct that science has now proven false.  The good aspect about this information is if you don’t want to believe it then you don’t have to and it probably won’t make your garden completely fail and not produce.  Enjoy and dig it!

Bum Steer: Put Chewing Gum In Mole Holes To Get Rid Of Moles.

Can we all say Urban Legend? The word has spread that Juicy Fruit gum placed in a mole holes will attract moles, because it is their favorite gum, when the mole eats the gum it will expand in the moles stomach and they will die. Have you ever heard anything so silly?  Gum expands???

Gum doesn’t expand in any animal’s stomach including a mole. Beside moles are carnivores (meat eaters), not fruits eaters, so they wouldn’t want any gum.

The best thing you can do to moles is leaving them alone! Yes the sight of their tunnels on the surface of your garden is alarming.  But their activity does not last very long because they want to spend their time in their nest deep in the ground and inside the tunnels they have dug.

If they do come out they feast on mature insects, snail larvae, grubs, and earthworms.  Moles do not care about your garden plants.
